Durak
Durak: The Most Popular Card Game in Russia and the CIS
Durak (Russian for "fool") is a card game known to almost everyone in Russia and the former Soviet countries. Unlike poker, there is no winner in the usual sense: every player tries to get rid of all their cards, and the last player left holding cards becomes the "durak", the fool.
Today Durak is played not only around the kitchen table but also online, including in club apps for real stakes. The game is fast and easy to learn, yet it rewards memory, calculation and the ability to read opponents.

Deck: 36 cards, from six to ace. The game is for 2 to 6 players.
Deal: each player receives 6 cards. The next card is turned face up and sets the trump suit; it is placed face up under the stock and will be drawn last.
First move: usually goes to the player with the lowest trump.
Attack and defense: the attacker leads a card, and the defender beats it with a higher card of the same suit or with any trump (if the attack was not a trump). A trump can only be beaten by a higher trump.
Throwing in: attackers may add cards of the same ranks already on the table. Usually no more than 6 cards per bout, and never more than the defender holds.
End of a bout: if the defender beats every card, they go to the discard pile and the defender attacks next. If not, the defender picks up all the cards on the table and loses their turn.
Drawing: after each bout, everyone with fewer than six cards draws back up from the stock, starting with the attacker.
Once the stock runs out, players leave the game one by one as they empty their hands. The last player still holding cards loses.
Throw-In and Transfer Durak
Throw-in (Podkidnoy)
The most common version: the attacker, and in multiplayer games the other players as well, may throw in cards of the same ranks already on the table.
Transfer (Perevodnoy)
A defender who has not yet beaten any card can "transfer" the attack by adding a card of the same rank. The next player must then defend against all the cards on the table. Transfer Durak is more dynamic and requires more calculation.
Online versions also offer options such as "with cheating" (illegal moves are allowed until someone catches them), draws and different deck sizes, so read the table description carefully.

In club apps, players join a table with a fixed stake. The loser (the durak) pays the stake to the other participants, and the platform takes a small commission. The exact payout rules depend on the app and the table.
Tips to Avoid Being the Fool
Save your trumps. Do not spend high trumps on small attacks early on: they decide the endgame once the stock runs out.
Dump small cards while the stock lasts. Early on it pays to lead sixes and sevens and draw better cards in return.
Remember the played cards. By the end of the stock, a strong player knows which cards opponents still hold and attacks their weak spots.
Sometimes picking up is better. Taking a couple of small cards early beats giving away your trump ace.
Watch the defender's hand size. Attack with runs of the same rank to exhaust their defense.
Where to Play Durak
Classic poker rooms do not offer Durak, but some club apps aimed at Russian-speaking players do. In our site's catalog you can find clubs and apps with Durak tables.
Durak is a great choice for anyone who wants fast games with simple, familiar rules and real competition.
