PLO6: Six-Card Omaha, Maximum Action at the Poker Table

PLO6 (Six-Card Pot-Limit Omaha) is the loudest version of Omaha. Every player is dealt six hole cards, which means 15 possible two-card combinations, more than twice as many as in PLO4. Strong hands are made constantly, and most pots are decided at the level of full houses, nut flushes and straights.

The game was born and became popular in club apps such as PPPoker, PokerBros, X-Poker and ClubGG. PLO6 attracts players who love big pots and constant multiway action. For a thoughtful player it is also one of the most profitable formats: strategy is still poorly studied, and opponents systematically overvalue their hands.

PLO6 Rules

The hand follows the classic Omaha structure: two blinds, six face-down cards for each player, then the flop, turn and river with a betting round on every street. Tables seat no more than 6 players, otherwise the deck would run out of cards. Bets are capped by the pot.

The same 2+3 rule: your final hand uses exactly two hole cards and exactly three board cards. Four of your six cards do not play in the final hand.

With so many cards in hand, beginners often misjudge their holding. The good news: apps highlight your best current hand automatically.

How Six Cards Change the Game

  • The nuts are the norm, not a rarity. On most boards at least one opponent holds the best possible hand or a strong draw to it.

  • Sets and two pair lose value. Hands that are monsters in Hold'em are often only medium strength here.

  • Blockers are a key tool. Knowing your six cards, you see a large part of the deck and can judge more accurately whether an opponent has the nuts.

  • Bluffing is harder, value betting is thicker. Opponents often have something and are reluctant to fold, so your main profit comes from value bets with the nuts.

Starting Hands in PLO6

In Six-Card Omaha almost every hand looks playable, but the gap between good and bad hands is still significant. Value:

  • Long rundowns: five or six connected cards or cards with small gaps, aimed at the top end of the straight.

  • Nut suitedness: an ace with a card of the same suit, ideally two such sets in different suits.

  • High pairs combined with connected cards: they give chances at top set and full houses.

Avoid hands where low cards only make low-end straights and the suits are not to the ace. In PLO6 that is the most direct path to expensive second-best hands.

Strategic Principles

  • Commit with the nuts and leading draws. Anything short of the nuts often plays as a bluff catcher.

  • Remember freerolls. Even with the current nuts against an opponent with the same nuts plus a draw, you can be on the wrong side of the split.

  • Do not chase every flop. Even when a hand looks playable, weak preflop calls from early position drain your bankroll quickly.

  • Keep at least 100-150 buy-ins. Variance in PLO6 is among the highest of all poker variants.

Where to Play PLO6

PLO6 is primarily a club game. It runs most often in unions on PPPoker, PokerBros, X-Poker and ClubGG, frequently with bomb pots, straddles and jackpots for quads and straight flushes. In classic rooms Six-Card Omaha is still rare.

If you are new to Omaha, start with PLO4 or PLO5: the core principles are the same, but mistakes are cheaper.
