Definition

The strongest possible hand at a given stage of the game with specific board cards. On different flops the nuts can be completely different hands, ranging from a set to a Royal Flush. A nut hand can stop being the strongest when certain cards come on the turn or river. For example, a player holding 78o on a rainbow 5 6 9 flop has the nuts, since no higher straight can be made, and a full house or stronger hands are impossible on such a board. However, if a 7 comes on the turn, the player’s hand will no longer be the nuts; in this situation the best hand is 8T, making the higher straight 6 7 8 9 T.
