Definition
A pair dealt to the player as his hole cards. For example, if a player is dealt 33 preflop, he is said to have a pocket pair of threes. A pocket pair is the only made hand preflop. It has an advantage over unmade hands such as connectors or suited cards, whose potential depends on the postflop cards. The strongest starting hand in poker is a pocket pair of aces, also called pocket rockets.
