Overlay

Definition

A situation in a poker tournament where the players’ buy-ins do not cover the prize pool announced by the organizers. An overlay is possible only in tournaments with a guaranteed prize pool. For example, a tournament is announced with a $1000 guarantee and $1 buy-ins. Only 900 people manage to register for this event. As a result, the organizer adds $100, and this amount is the overlay. Obviously, playing a tournament with an overlay is more profitable for players, since they face fewer opponents for the same prize pool.
