Definition
Increasing the bet after one of the previous players has bet. Preflop, the first voluntary putting of chips into the pot counts as a raise, because the first bet is the big blind. On every postflop street the raise is the second bet, or 2-bet. The size of a raise depends on the game format: in limit poker you can raise by the size of the big blind, pot-limit variants cap a raise at the size of the pot, and in no-limit games you can raise with all of your chips.
