Three of a kind made with two hole cards and one card on the board. For example, holding 4d 4s with a board of 6s Td 4c, you have already made a set of fours on the flop. Compared with trips, which are made with one hole card and two cards on the board, a set is less predictable and therefore has more potential to get paid. A set is the fourth-ranked hand, beating high card, one pair and two pair.
