Definition
A pot formed from players’ bets after one of the players in the hand, who has a smaller stack, goes all-in. The side pot is played for separately from the main pot, only among the players who contributed to it. For example, Player 1 in the UTG position goes all-in for $80 into a $15 pot, and Player 2 (stack $300) and Player 3 (stack $400) in the cutoff and small blind call, putting $80 each into the pot. As a result, a main pot of $250 is formed. On the flop Player 2 bets another $100 and Player 3 calls. A side pot of $200 is formed from these players’ bets. Nobody raises before the showdown. If Player 1 wins at showdown, he gets only the main pot – $250. If Player 2 or Player 3 has the strongest hand, he gets both pots, $450 in total.
